Mary Shelley’s ability to create such multidimensional characters in Frankenstein proves that writing is a powerful tool that has the ability to provoke vastly different opinions amongst readers. Even though each individual reading the story is reading the exact same words, their interpretation of those words often leads to opposing views in regards to the fate of the characters. The creature, in particular, has been a popular topic of discussion when conducting a close read of the novel due to his arguable versatility as a victim and villain. The creature’s perseverance and remarkable ability to overcome his presumed infant death allows him to be perceived as an underdog of sorts, who will continue to fight against the odds. This perseverance and constant struggle is the mark of a victim trying to survive. Moreover, Victor’s lack of responsibility demonstrates his selfish nature and total disregard of the consequences of his actions, making the creature a victim of Victor’s actions. This abandonment is a major factor in distinguishing the creature as a victim as opposed to a villain . But an actionfor which a youth may be declared a delinquent in one community may not beagainst the law in another community. But in other communities, the police may refer such children toa juvenile court, where they may officially be declared delinquents. It brought attention to youths neglected by their parents, orapproval by delinquent friends, or it solved problems of an unhappy home life inother ways. More recent studies have revealed that many delinquents had parentswith whom they did not get along or who were inconsistent in their patterns ofdiscipline and punishment. Neighborhood conditions have been stressed in studiesby sociologists. Many of these inquiries concentrate on differing rates ofdelinquency, rather than on the way individuals become delinquents. A series ofstudies have shown that delinquency rates are above average in the poorestsections of cities. Such areas have many broken homes and a high rate ofalcoholism. They also have poor schools, high unemployment, few recreationalfacilities, and high crime rates. Many young people see delinquency as theironly escape from boredom, poverty, and other problems.
